Contact Tracing Process and Protocol Information

Dear TCNJ Community,

I write to follow-up on President Foster’s email sent yesterday. As CDC guidelines and recommendations are changing I wanted to share some updated information and reminders on contact tracing initiatives at TCNJ, including guidance on what to do if you are identified as a close contact of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 and/or if you begin to experience symptoms.

All unvaccinated individuals (including those who have an approved medical or religious exemption) who come to campus are required to complete the daily self-checkup on the Roar app. Once you have completed the daily self-checkup, you will receive your health pass (green pass indicates being cleared, red pass indicates not cleared) for the day.

All members of the campus community, regardless of vaccination status, should use the Self-Report a Covid-19 Case Diagnosis function of the Roar app to indicate test results received off-campus. The COVID Outreach team receives all testing results from Bergen New Bridge directly. This process is separate from the daily self-checkup. Please note:

  1. All red passes are cleared after contact tracing has occurred (depending on your status).

  2. The COVID Outreach Team works with Student Health Services and Human Resources to ensure we work through every case and make sure everyone is appropriately cleared to return to work or classes. This does not happen automatically. It takes time to review every individual case.

  3. When you report you have tested positive or are symptomatic on the Roar app your case is assigned to a contact tracer to follow-up. This process is not a 24-7 operation; however, you will be called within one business day.

  4. Negative PCR tests are emailed to covidcomply@tcnj.edu each evening. These cases need to be reviewed by Student Health Services and then are manually cleared in the Roar app. This may take one business day based on the volume of tests received.

Important information if you find yourself to be a close contact or symptomatic:

SYMPTOMATIC – With COVID cases still occurring in conjunction with flu/allergy season, it is important that if you begin to experience symptoms or are feeling ill that you do not come to campus for work or attend classes and refrain from contact with others.

  • Everyone:

    • Please update the daily self-checkup on the Roar app and a member of the COVID outreach team will contact you within one business day on next steps.

    • Please continue to wear face coverings indoors

  • Students:

    • In addition to updating the Roar app, please notify your faculty that you are experiencing symptoms so that they are able to provide classroom accommodations when you are unable to attend class.

    • Students residing on-campus should contact Student Health Services to schedule a COVID test as soon as possible. You can schedule a telemedicine sick visit with Student Health Services on OWL at  tcnj.medicatconnect.com or you can go to a testing site of your choice. If you test off-campus, please upload your test report to OWL at tcnj.medicatconnect.com and email health@tcnj.edu that you were tested due to symptoms.

  • Employees:

    • In addition to updating the Roar app, please email your supervisor that you are experiencing symptoms so that they are able to provide possible work accommodations.

    • Get a COVID Test as soon as possible by contacting your healthcare provider or To find a location near you visit: https://my.castlighthealth.com/corona-virus-testing-sites/

CLOSE CONTACT – As we resume activities on-campus there is a potential for you to be a close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID. Please understand that the CDC guidance has changed since last year due to vaccination statuses.

Vaccinated Students/Employees. If you are “fully vaccinated” (at least 2 weeks post-vaccination) and do not have covid-like symptoms, you do not need to quarantine based on current CDC guidelines.

  1. It is recommended that you get tested for COVID between 3-5 days of the exposure; however, this is not a requirement. You must mask up indoors at all times per TCNJ policy. TCNJ’s testing protocol now allows for asymptomatic close contacts to be tested by Bergen New Bridge on-campus. Please refer to the testing coordinator’s email sent September 14 or the Fall 2021 Website for additional information on scheduling a test on-campus.

  2. If you become symptomatic during any point in the next two weeks it is required that you:

    1. Fill out the daily self-checkup on the Roar App.

    2. Isolate until you get further information from the TCNJ COVID Outreach Team.

    3. Continue to wear your face covering.

  3. Students, as outlined in Provost Osborn’s September 13, 2021 email, please check in with those around you at the beginning of each class to record their names in the event you are contacted for this information by the COVID Outreach team. This should include your neighboring peers who you are within 6 feet of you in class.

Unvaccinated Students/Employees. If you are not fully vaccinated then you must quarantine for 14 days based on your last exposure to the positive case. Please ensure you do the following:

  1. Complete the Roar App daily self-checkup.

  2. Quarantine until you get further information from the TCNJ COVID Outreach Team.

  3. Get a COVID Test on-campus 3-5 days after your exposure. You can schedule a telemedicine sick visit with Student Health Services on OWL at  tcnj.medicatconnect.com or you can go to a testing site of your choice. Please upload your test report to OWL at tcnj.medicatconnect.com.

  4. Continue to wear your face covering.
