COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement
All students taking classes and/or participating in on-campus activities during the fall 2021 semester were required to provide proof of vaccination by August 9, 2021. Learn more about TCNJ’s vaccine requirement.
The TCNJ experience in fall 2021 differs for students who are fully vaccinated and for those who have been granted an exemption. (The CDC considers individuals to be fully vaccinated if they have received their single-dose vaccine or second of two doses two or more weeks ago.) Please note that due to the recent increase of new coronavirus cases, and consistent with CDC recommendations, as of Monday, August 16, everyone on campus—regardless of vaccination status—must wear a face covering indoors.
Students who are fully vaccinated may:
- live on campus and participate in the full range of activities on campus this fall. They do not need to physically distance or have routine COVID-19 testing if they do not have COVID-19-like symptoms. If they are a close contact of someone who has tested positive, vaccinated students would be exempt from quarantine unless they develop COVID-19-like symptoms.
- be subject to symptomatic testing, random asymptomatic testing, or regular testing if there is evidence of substantial or high transmission in the community.
- choose to maintain physical distance or wear a face covering in areas where doing so is not required.
Students who have been granted a medical or religious exemption from the vaccine must:
- observe physical distance requirements while on campus.
- be tested on campus weekly for COVID-19.
- quarantine if they have been identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, even if they themselves have tested negative.
Students with an exemption are permitted to (while wearing a face covering and physically distancing):
- attend class in person. (Faculty have been provided with names of exempted students in their courses; staff have been provided with names of exempted students with whom they meet for advising, mentoring, or other high-contact interactions.)
- use the library.
- visit offices on campus.
- use the dining facilities.
- participate in varsity athletics (with potential restrictions for team travel).
- participate in club, organization, recreation, cultural or campus activities that do not involve high contact with others and for which physical distancing is feasible and enforced by the group.
However, students with an exemption are not permitted to:
- live in the residence halls.
- participate in club, organization, recreation, cultural or campus activities that involve high contact with others and for which physical distancing is not feasible and enforced.
For the fall semester, there is a reduced expectation for testing of members of the campus community who are non-symptomatic and fully vaccinated. These individuals may be subject to symptomatic testing, random asymptomatic testing, or regular testing if there is evidence of substantial or high transmission in the community.
Effective Monday, November 1, 2021, students with an exemption who come to campus must be tested for COVID-19 weekly. Athletes should talk with their coaches regarding special testing requirements. Vaccinated students without symptoms who believe they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 may choose to be tested on campus as well.
TCNJ’s testing partner, Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, is continuing its services with the college through the fall semester. Compliance with testing is required to participate in on-campus classes and activities. All students must register with and supply current medical insurance information to Bergen New Bridge to participate in the testing program. The testing program utilizes a rapid antigen test and provides same-day results.
On-Campus COVID-19 Testing Information and FAQs
Anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 will be exempt from testing for 90 days after a positive test result. To be placed on the exemption list, students should submit test results to Student Health Services via OWL, and employees should submit test results to Human Resources.
Your Daily Self-Checkup
We continue to use the daily self-checkup feature of the Roar app, as it is a critical component of TCNJ’s health and safety initiatives. Please note that the expectations for its use are different for those who are vaccinated versus those who are not.
All unvaccinated individuals (including those who have an approved medical or religious exemption) who come to campus are required to complete the daily self-checkup. Doing so helps the COVID Outreach Team monitor symptoms and determine whether contact tracing needs to occur. Once you have completed the self-checkup, you will receive your health pass (green pass indicates being cleared, red pass indicates not cleared) for the day.
Another health and safety component of the Roar app is the self-report COVID Diagnosis feature, which allows you to indicate both recent COVID-19 testing and your test results. This process is separate from the daily self-checkup.
In keeping with best practice and consistent with state and CDC guidance, all members of the community who reside on campus or spend any amount of time on campus are asked to take Roscoe’s Pledge, which follows, to help ensure the health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and others. Roscoe’s Pledge will be monitored and updated as appropriate guidance changes in the coming weeks and months.
Personal Protective Equipment
Standard face coverings will be provided to members of the community upon request, and individuals may also request clear face shields from the Accessibility Resource Center if needed to ensure clear communicative ability.
If You Become Ill
Despite vaccination, we realize there is a likelihood that members of the community may experience symptoms of COVID-19. These students should refrain from coming into contact with others before obtaining proper medical advice. In following New Jersey Department of Health and TCNJ guidelines, any non-vaccinated community member who is exposed to COVID-19 will need to adhere to the proper testing, contact tracing, and quarantine protocols.
Students residing on campus who become ill should consult Student Health Services (609.771.2889), which will test students who are symptomatic for COVID-19. Residential students who test positive for COVID-19 or who are identified as having been in close contact with someone who tested positive will be required to submit themselves to testing as directed.
In coordination with local health departments in Ewing and Mercer counties, the college will conduct contact-tracing outreach to inform individuals that they may have been exposed to the virus.
